V. Denise Awtrey April 18, 1962 - April 29, 2023
Veronda Denise Awtrey, 61, formerly of Lake Forest Dr., New London, NC passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Mountain Vista Health Park in Denton.

A celebration of life service will be held at Chandler’s Grove United Methodist Church at a later date.

Denise was born April 18, 1962, in Blount County, Alabama the daughter of Grant Awtrey and Melba Jean Hamrick Awtrey. She was a member of Loves Creek Baptist Church in Siler City, NC and had worked in childcare. Her father, Grant Awtrey preceded her in death.

She is survived by her mother, Melba Jean Hamrick Awtrey of Badin Lake; sister, Margaret Awtrey-Kirkman of Badin Lake; nephew, Paxton Kirkman (Heather) and their children, Logan, Devon, and Haley; her special friend, Karen Jarrett. 2 of Denise’s caretakers at Mountain Vista with whom she had become close with, Cody and Stacy.

Mitchell Wallace November 25, 1995 - April 28, 2023
Mitchell Wallace, 27, of US Hwy 220 Alt. South, Candor, died Friday, April 28, 2023 in Rockingham due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral Service will be 2:00 PM Friday, May 5, 2023 at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Terry Craig and Rev. Ken Lyerly officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, from 6 to 8 PM at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home.



Born in Moore County on November 25, 1995, he was the son of Michael Wayne Wallace and Penny Callicutt Wallace. Mitchell was a self-employed entrepreneur.



He is survived by his parents, Penny Wallace of the home and Michael Wallace of Riverview FL; his son, Mason Mitchell Wallace of the home; sister, Samantha Raelyn Wallace of the home; brother, Nicholas Wallace of the home; nephew, Jaxon Wallace; Paternal Grandfather, Mike Wallace (Charleen) of Rockingham, Paternal Grandmother, Sandra Wallace of Candor; Maternal Grandmother, Dorene Gray (Wayne McInnis) of Biscoe, and Maternal Grandfather, Bill Moss (Donna) of Lexington.

Jack Phillips January 23, 1936 - April 29, 2023
Preacher Jack, 87, went to his heavenly home on April 29, 2023. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, pastor, evangelist and friend. Funeral Arrangements are incomplete at this time at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home.



He was born Thomas Holland Phillips in Durham on January 23, 1936, the son of Owen and Virginia Hancock Phillips. He began his ministry as pastor of Candor Baptist Church in 1960, followed by Ebenezer Christian Church in Raleigh NC; Grace Chapel Christian Church in Sanford NC; and in 1976 when he founded Tabernacle Baptist Church in Candor NC, where he served for 25 years. He then served in itinerant ministry and pulpit supply for many churches in North Carolina. While at Tabernacle, he ran Living Water Youth Camp for many summers.



He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Patricia Hargett Phillips; son, Chris Phillips (Dawn); daughter, Sherri Free (Michael); seven grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Gloria Edwards of Siler City; brother, Jerry Phillips of Siler City.

Phyllis Dudley Shackleford February 05, 1944 - April 23, 2023
Phyllis Jo Dudley Shackleford, 79, of S. Main St. Ext., Denton, NC passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at her residence.

Phyllis was born February 5, 1944, in Columbus County, NC to Fred Dudley and Dorothy Beulah Barnes Dudley. She worked for Councill Craftsman Furniture as a final inspector and was a member of Clear Springs United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Dudley.

She is survived by sons, Terry Shackleford (Janet) of Winston Salem and Jodie Shackleford of Denton; brother, Ralph Dudley (Ann) of Ga; sister, Gayle Chaffin (Howard) of Lexington; 4 grandchildren, Christy Hiatt, Aaron Burkholder, Issac Shackleford, and Jana Rae Shackleford; 8 great-grandchildren, Lailyn, Kaitlyn, Sianna, and Isabelle Hiatt, Blair and Norah Burkholder, Riley, and Natalie Shackleford.

Frankie Lewis Curtis, age 54, of Farmer, NC, passed away April 14, 2023.
Frankie was born on April 21, 1968, to Charles Edward Curtis and Kay Garner Curtis (Craig). He is survived by his parents, Kay Garner Craig (Reid) and Charles Edward Curtis, his children, Tabitha Kay Curtis, and Brandon Lewis Curtis, two sisters, Charlotte Curtis Mueller (Uli) and Lisa Curtis Ingram (Jimmie), grandchildren Addilyn Mae Lewis, Wesson Reid York and Sterling East York, and nephew, Emmett Tennyson Edwards. Frankie was blessed with many close aunts, uncles, and cousins who were more like siblings to him. Frankie was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Magdalene Garner, uncles Clayton and Donnell Garner, aunts Elna Garner Talbert, Patty Garner Hamby and close cousin, Terri Talbert.

Frankie enjoyed fishing, hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, gardening, hunting arrowheads and antiques. From his early teens, he grew a loyal following of patrons for lawn services. As a youth, he participated at Farmer United Methodist Church's UMYF program. He played football, enjoyed weightlifting, and had the strength of some men twice his size. He graduated from Southwestern Randolph (SWR) in 1986.

Frankie was an expert arborist and his clients loved him. He also worked in plastics injection molding for over 20 years and was sought out for expertise to correct even the most inconspicuous color or design flaws in products.

Frankie was a man of faith and maintained a prayer journal for others. He was known for his wit, intellect and mostly, his kind heart. Everywhere he went, he won people over with his sincerity and warmth. His biggest love was his family; Frankie's children, grandchildren and nephew were his world.

Timothy Hoyt Everhart, 53, of Lexington passed away on Friday, April 14, 2023
A memorial service will be held at 6 pm on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, in the Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel with Pastor Tommy Hepler officiating.



The family will receive friends from 5 pm until 6 pm prior to the service.



Timothy was born in Davidson County on February 22, 1970, to Crawford Hoyt Everhart and Lena Hepler Everhart. He was a loving husband, stepfather, brother, and step-grandfather whose memory will be cherished forevermore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Franklin Everhart.
