Harold “Buddy” Foil Hedrick Jr. was born on December 2, 1945 to Harold and Ruth Hedrick. It was a childhood filled with 4H, farming, football, and learning the names of the trees, plants, and stars that were a backdrop to his adventures with his siblings.

After successfully graduating from Central Davidson Senior High and successfully being asked to leave University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Buddy joined the Army in 1966. There he served as a First Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers. While on leave from the Army, Buddy met a beautiful brown haired, blue-eyed high school senior named Frankie Lou Everhart in the parking lot of the Barbecue Center. After a few dates, they parted ways. Buddy returned to UNC after the Army and graduated with a business degree. During college, he reconnected with the blue-eyed girl, beginning a great love affair that lasted 51 years; 47 as husband and wife.
