Sue Burton September 10, 1935 - August 23, 2023
The tenacious spirit of Etta Sue Burton finally agreed to rest and peacefully ascend to heaven on August 23, 2023, after battling dementia for several years. She was a fighter throughout her entire life, and her final years were no exception. Even though some of her memories were not intact, she remained the same loving, strong willed and humorous person that her friends and family have always known and loved her to be.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, August 28, 2023, in the Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel with Pastor Jeff Purdue officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 10 am until 11 am prior to the service at the funeral home.

Sue was born on September 10, 1935, to Jennie Pauline Link Mitchell and Troy Edward Mitchell, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Malcolm David “Sam” Burton, daughter Vickie Cooper, daughter Paula Haynes, grandchildren Pam Haynes (spouse Mitchell Sowers), Buddy Sechrest (spouse Rachel), and three great grandchildren – Lilliana Jewel Sechrest, Malcolm Fisher Sechrest and Badin Tucker Sechrest. Sue spent much of her life taking care of many family members, raising her daughters, going to church, and helping her husband Sam run Sam’s Restaurant, which they owned and operated from 1968 to 1980. She met many customers at the restaurant who became lifelong friends, including Wesley and Debbie James. Sue was an extraordinary cook and cared deeply for her customers.

Later in life, she took care of her grandchildren, Buddy and Pam, every day after school and in the summer. After working at the restaurant for many years, she no longer wanted to cook, so she made sure her grandchildren enjoyed many Burger King kid’s meals instead. They had a lot of adventures together, from visiting friends around town and going shopping, to Sue tending to their skinned knees and telling them to stop riding their bikes so fast. Once in an argument, Pam and Buddy threw ketchup packets at each other that exploded all over a beautiful bedroom Sue decorated with a powder blue bedspread. She was madder than fire, but she loved them anyway. No matter what trouble they caused, she was always there to support them.
She also spent many years having adventures with her best friend, Darlene Holmes, who preceded her in death. They enjoyed going to church together, eating at Bojangles and Cracker Barrel, shopping, going to the beach and chatting on the swing inside Sue’s screened porch. We’ll always remember Sue on her porch swing, barefoot and enjoying a summer breeze.

Her great grandchildren, Lilly, Fisher and Badin, kept her going in the final years. She loved spending time with her babies. Her daughters, Paula and Vickie, worked tirelessly to keep her comfortable at home. They are phenomenal caretakers, and the family appreciates the loving care and support they provided.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Sue's caregivers, Alex Craver, Christy, and Elise, whose compassion and care was a source of immense comfort to both Sue and her family.

All the memories we made with Sue and the times she made us laugh can’t fit here, but they will live in our hearts. We’ll see you again, Etta Sue.
