Sarah Tussey Carter July 21, 1931 - October 19, 2023
Sarah Elizabeth Tussey Carter, 92, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2023 at Brookdale Weddington Park in Matthews, NC after several years of declining health. Prior to moving to Brookdale, she was a long-time resident of Westside Drive in Lexington.



The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 2:00 pm at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Lexington, formerly Second Presbyterian Church, by Rev. Randy Hall. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park.



Sarah was born in Lexington on July 21, 1931 to the late John Tussey and Edna McCrary Tussey. She worked as a beautician and later worked at Burlington Furniture and Coble Dairy. She was a life-long member of Second Presbyterian Church, serving in many roles, including Deacon, President of the Women of the Church, and the first woman elected as Elder.

Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Curtis Carter, a son Gary Curtis Carter, two sisters, Lois Haywood and Pauline Craver, and a brother, Joe Tussey. She is survived by a daughter, Marla Eckel (Geof), a son, Ted Carter (Sharon), grandchildren, Taylor Eckel (Brooke), Myles Eckel (Ashley), Sarah Catherine Jaques (Chris) and Wesley Carter, several great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law Laura Briles.



The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm on Tuesday in the Fellowship Hall at New Hope Presbyterian Church prior to the funeral service.



The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale, the staff at Nurses at Heart/Caring Hearts of Grace, VIA Health Partners (Hospice) and her personal caregivers, Janine Singleton and Geralyn Russo, for their compassionate care of Sarah and the family.
